Woman Rights and Domestic violence(perspective②)
【perspective②】Introducing the perpetrator's position in domestic violence
BBC News. (2021, December 8). Domestic abuse: ‘No female should be subjected to what I did’. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-lancashire-59545726
This is written from the perspective of an aggressor of violence. It details the psychological state of a man who has been violent toward his wife.
Hello . My name is Rob, and I am a domestic abuser. I originally committed domestic violence against my wife and am currently taking a domestic violence prevention course aimed at breaking the cycle of physical and emotional abuse and working to overcome the symptoms. The course began in 2011, and since then it appears to have helped 216 men recognize their problems and work to change their behavior. And those that have partially completed or completed the course have not committed a domestic violence offense within a year.
Prior to taking the course I did not think I needed to take it. I was not aware of any wrongdoing in my past behavior.
However, by taking this course I realized that my thinking was distorted.
When I was in a relationship with my girlfriend, I used to lash out at my partner as soon as I got angry under the influence of drugs.
To be honest, I never thought of myself as a perpetrator. However, through this course, I realized that there are many forms of domestic violence. What I was doing was
domination over my partner. When I was with my partner, I was really self-centered. I didn't care if everything went my way, and I didn't consider the other person's feelings. If there was something I wanted, I would use words to get it out of them, and sometimes I would rely on force to get it.
Finally, through this course, I learned that people can change.
For me, this program gave me the opportunity to change.
It helped me to think about how I should live the rest of my life.
